Why are there so many circular fields or farms in Nebraska?
I doubt the property lines of many farms are actually “circular.”
What you are probably seeing are mostly square or rectangular fields with a circular crop being irrigated by a center-point radial irrigation system.
In such a system water is pumped from one point and distributed via a single pipe boom rotating around that point.
That boom becomes the radius of a circle of green crops with drier land outside that circle.
You will generally see more such irrigation the farther west you go in Nebraska as the eastern portions are more rolling land with a little higher rainfall.
Even areas that normally have good rainfall will have irrigated seed production fields to make sure the supply is always there for the next year.
